Important Security Alert
Burke & Herbert Bank Corporate Security is actively investigating reports of unauthorized debits in the amount of $29.95 posted to a small number of our customers' accounts. This fraudulent posting activity has impacted many U.S. banks, and is not isolated to Burke & Herbert Bank. Corporate Security is working with the Secret Service to investigate the issue and help shut down the perpetrator.
The debit transactions, which first posted on March 20, 2013, appear to be from Internet Web services such as "World System," "Web Service," "Web World," "Global Web," "Web Entertainment," "World Entertainment" or similar variations, but were charged to bank accounts fraudulently. At this time, all known instances of unauthorized debits have been credited back to our customers' accounts so that no financial losses were incurred. Those who were impacted will see a debit for $29.95 followed by a credit for the same amount on their transaction history. We are closely monitoring this situation and are reversing any unauthorized transactions within one business day.
We strongly recommend that you review your account transaction activity on a regular basis for any suspicious or unrecognized activity – particularly now for any debits in the amount of $29.95 posted on or after March 20, 2013. If you believe there may be an unauthorized transaction on your account, please stop by any Burke & Herbert Bank branch to complete an affidavit, or call us at 703-684-1655.
